Telugu Television : A provocative gaint!

Television Journalism is the discipline of collecting, analyzing, verifying and presenting information regarding current events, trends, issues and people. Unfortunately today's media, Television seems to be doing a lot bad for the people rather than good. One may ask, Why we want to talk about the Television. Well, it is the media that most of Andhra Pradesh's people get to the latest happenings from television Media. That is the only media where the news is instant to the viewer (of course nothing beats Twitter though)! We are sure that this TV phenomenon is not special to Andhra, it is the world wide phenomenon that many depend on TV for the daily/hourly/minute wise news and activities in local, statewide, nationwide and international arena.

The major Telugu TV channels seems to be TV9, ETV2, i News, TV5 and NTV. There seems to be other channels but their news viewership seems be small. Of course, the objective of the article is not to talk about the origins of these telugu channels or the money behind each of them; but to discuss the "Ethical Standards".

Especially in the current day, i feel a lot sad and furious about the ethical standards and double standards of these channels. Following are the reasons why i say... "These TV Channels has made the Telangana issue a BIG DEAL". Telanagana issue is a Fanatic, Furious, Violence and Undemocratic way of dealing with the "Wanting a new Stateehood". Again, no one is against the sentiments or feelings of people in Telangana. It is the Political Leaders and SOME of the FANATICS from Telanagana who is the cause for all this hi-tension-melo-drama in Andhra Pradesh!.

Example 1 : The TV news reader asks the TV reporter in the field, "Do you think the situation there is OK, Bad, Worse or Lot of Violence ?". Now for me the question is why should these so called News Reporters LEAD the situation. This gives an impression to the viewer that something "WRONG or SPECIAL or BAD SITUATION". Sure that this kind of "talk" would get them more viewership, but don't you have any responsibility in the way you present and/or gather the facts.

Example 2 : The TV analyst will ask for a discussion he will call ABC and XYZ to the channel office. The way these people (ABC and XYZ) are selected is they will be from opposite parties or someone with a totally different views. Now, this Analyst will take all the allegations from ABC and add masala to it and then ask what the XYZ feel about this view. This leads to a very heated up discussion between the ABC, XYZ and the Analyst will be taking the sadistic pleasure of seeing this fight!

Example 3 : Inappropriate usage of the stage. They will call 2 people to the Channel News Room and there will be a person on the phone line. Now, the unfortunate thing is the one on the phone line does not get to speak what he wants. The mere advantage that people are in studio, they can connect with Analyst or the Viewers very easily than the one of the Phone line. These analysts can also stop them over the phone line and continue discussion on the studio. This makes it a complete uneven platform for the people to express their opinions.

Example 4 : Just because you are a news channel does not mean you can ask any tom, dick and harry for the views. In the recent riots in Andhra Pradesh most of the channels would go and people on the road, "What do you think about the situation" or "Do you want this separation of State". The problem with these kind of things is that, many people they are asking is just random and probably not politically oriented people. It is like you are asking views of a Movie Celebrity about the Nano technology used in the Mars Mission ? Wow... can you imagine how their faces would look like ?

Of course, that does not mean that the common mans opinion is not important. I am trying to bring the point that we nee to clearly distinguish between the "serious news reporting" and "opinion polls". With 10 years of intense training from Poets, Literature, Schools, Colleges and Politicians, Telanagana people will be able to say why they need Telangana; But Andhra People has no reason to separate the state. So, in short, know the people you are asking and their backgrounds.

Example 5 : Interpretation of the News. When the news Analysts and Reporters are talking about a thing, it has become a great fashion to "Magnifying, Provoking, Twisting and Interpreting" the news that they have. I really mean this. Please pay attention to the actual incident and how these Reporters and Analysts talk about it. It's like the end of the world for them.

Once a news from the State, Center or from any Leader, the first thing the TV Channels will try to do is to make it an ISSUE. Please understand that there a difference between the NEWS and ISSUE. A news is some thing that you would just hear about something and probably you forget. But for these TV Channels, it is not the NEWS that gets them the viewership but it is the ISSUE that gets the more viewership.

In the above context, when someone releases a statement, TV Channels try to take sides and ask each and everyone if this is in their FAVOR or If they feel CHEATED or If they are BETRAYED ? For us the question is WHY should these TV Channels do this cheap trick of provoking people by playing with their sentiments ?.

Our Final Request : Now-a-days media has a STRONG role in the way news spreads across the nation and world. Please be aware that as a GOOD TV Channel, you have the responsibility to FILTER the news, Analyze it and show it to the public. My friends in US and UK say that the media completely discriminates the news and has government regulated filters on what they can and cant show. If there is a news that MAY provoke people, it is NOT aired.

Please take the role of a Pacifier rather than Adding Fuel to the fire.

  1. I am 100 percent in favor of United State. I may agree if my following three questions are answered by any Telangana supportes/leaders.
    1. Why the T- Separation is required? As seen in news ever politician is saying that except hyderabad rest in Telangana are backward. My query is are there any instances of agitation for the so called reasons for being backward? Are there instances of resignations are suicides for that cause?
    2. Can any T- Politician disagree that the hard earned money invested by Seemaandhra's (Not only in business even the individuals like us made own residence just with the feeling that we will be unite.). Pay back us every penny with interest then try to build your own Hyderabad.
    3. As KCR said, "vidipoyi kalisundam". Any literate can simply say that does it make any sense? Say for eg. If an Andhra boy got married to T- girl, do they accept after bifurcation if we say with T-girl that, "vidipoyi kalisundam"... sorry we are literate and sensible we never thin of such faulty words.
